Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 4: Though canteens in Universities are providing food items on subsidized cost but in Central University of Jammu, the Canteen owner has been openly looting the students by charging exorbitantly on various items as well as taking Rs. 5 for packing of items.
The students of CUJ informed Early Times that that Canteen owner at Raya Suchani main campus has adopted various practices to extract money from students.
"The cost of one plate of Momos is Rs. 40 but if some student demanded to get it packed, the owner asked for Rs. 5 extra for packing, which is illegal", a student said, adding that even the branded companies, which have been charging for carry bags were fined by Metrological department but none was at University to penalize the owner.
The students further claimed that on the rate list, the rate of Chana-Puri was written as Rs. 25 but they charged Rs. 30 and when they enquired, the owner gave a weird reply, "In the rate list it is written as Chana-Puri but he is giving Chana-Batura so he is taking Rs. 30".
"The general practice of the canteen owner at CUJ is that if we take some items and the bill is of Rs. 40 or 45, the owner will give candies or chocolate of Rs. 5 or 10 but never returned the change and simple argument is that he didn't have the change and student should give the exact amount otherwise accept the chocolate or candies", the students said.
They further complained that to avoid any complaint the owner didn't provide the bills. "Usually the customer is given a bill and a copy of bill is kept by the owner on which the item is provided but there is only one bill, which is taken away by his employees, while delivering the item", students said.
Registrar of CUJ Dr. Ravi Kumar assured that he would initiate proper action if the owner would found indulge in such practices.
