Officials sources said around half a dozen sand bunkers have been raised along the 10 kilometres of Airport Road that connects the City Centre with Srinagar International Airport. Sources said the intelligence agencies have been apprehending that terrorist could use the Airport road to sneak into the Srinagar City from Budgam side and thus such arrangements have been put in place.
The bunkers however have been erected with good looks from outsides lest they give an unusual look to visitors drive down the road.
"Basically these bunkers are temporary and meant for day time use in case of exigency. For the rest of the time these structures will be empty, "said a senior official on the conditional of anonymity. He however said there establishment of bunkers was a must to prevent foreign terrorists from being able to execute their nefarious designs.
"These bunkers are essentially for the safety of the common people and to develop the sense of security among them because we don't want the terrorists to have a field day," the official said.
The security agencies apprehended that in the last around of the month some highly trained foreign terrorists may have infiltrated into Kashmir and thus would be desperate to reach Srinagar to create a scene.
"Many launching pads have been active from the across the LOC and thus there is every possibility that some of them have been able to infiltrate under the cover of shelling," said an official in the know of matter. Despite repeated attempts, the concerned couldn't be contacted for comments.
