Leh Police nabs foreign national using Thuraya satellite phone

JAMMU, Sept 14: Police arrested a foreign national using Thuraya satellite phone in Leh region.
"For the last many days, a specific Thuraya activity was being noticed at various locations of Leh viz Main Market, Namgail Tesmo Gonpa, Sankar, Pangong Lake, Kharu Shang areas for which search was conducted at various locations and finally one of the police teams of Police Station Leh succeeded in recovering the Thuraya communication set alongwith the user from a local Hotel near Juma Bagh," police spokesman here said.
He said that illegal user was found to be a foreign national who was using the Thuraya set illegally at different locations and added, "The used Thuraya satellite phone alongwith the charger and the SIM has been seized from the possession of the violator".
The spokesman added that legal action under Section 4/20, 21 of Indian Telegraph Act has been initiated against the violator by Police Station Leh.
In view of this incident, all Tour Operators, Hotel and Guest House owners, Taxi Operators have been requested to brief their respective clients before their treks and tours not to use them as the use of Thuraya communication without proper permission is illegal vide Ministry of Home Affairs Govt of India vide No II/20034/608/2011-1S.II/M Dated Jan 15, 2018, he added and said that the violator shall be booked under Section 4/20, 21 Indian Telegraph Act and Section 6 Indian wireless Act.
