Custodial death case: Medical Board conducts post-mortem of deceased

Jammu, Sept 15: A day after the death of Ikhlaq Ahmad Khan, who was died in police custody shortly after his arrest, a medical board of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu conducted the post-mortem and handed over the body to the family for last rites.
The Police department suspended two constables namely Sulkhan Singh and Manpreet Singh for dereliction of duty during arrest of the deceased on Saturday.
On the directions of District Magistrate Jammu, a Medical Board of doctors constituted by the higher authorities of the GMC&H Jammu comprising Dr Rita Gupta, Forensic Medicine, Dr Mohi, General Medicine, Dr Navneet Naz, Pathology of GMC Jammu and later one more doctor Dr Amjad Bhat was included on the demand of family members, who were seeking that a doctor should be included from their religion.
As per doctors, the post-mortem of Ikhlaq Ahmad was supposed to be conducted at 10:30 AM on Sunday but due to family demand, the post-mortem of the deceased was delayed and conducted afternoon in the presence of concerned Sub Divisional Magistrate Satish Sharma with Videography and submitted reports to concerned quarters.
Superintendent of Police Headquarter Farooq Qaiser Malik told that first case was registered in NDPS Act against deceased in Police Station Nawabad in the year 2016 and second case was registered in Miran Sahib Police Station in NDPS Act in 2019.
He also told that post-mortem was conducted under the supervision of SDM Satish Sharma and senior officer of the Police Department and the body was later handed over to the family for his last rites.
It is in place to mention here that the 32-year old Ikhlaq Ahmad Khan, who was residing in Janipur area, was a suspected drug peddler and arrested by a team of Miran Sahib Police Station on last Saturday. As per police statement, he complained of uneasiness and started shivering while he was being taken to the Concerned Police Station for questioning.
As his condition got deteriorated, police personnel shifted him to GMC&H Jammu where doctors declared him brought dead. Following the suspicious death of Ikhlaq, the family members as well as relatives held a protest and demanded an inquiry into the case to ascertain the real reasons behind his death.
Family members believed that the police personnel were hiding the truth and cooked an unjustified story behind Ikhlaq's death.
