Panchayat Khandwal pledges not to use plastic

Jammu, Sept 22: In a first of its kind, taking ahead the initiative of the Prime of India Narendra Modi against the single-use plastic Panchayat Khandwal today took a unique initiative to say no to single-use plastic and distributed jute bags among shopkeepers at subsidized rates.
A meeting was today convened by the Panchayat Khandwal under the chairmanship of Sarpanch Sonam Deep Singh Aulakh which was attended by panches and hundreds of local residents in which the participants pledged not to use plastic carry bags. While speaking on the occasion Sarpanch Sonam Deep Singh and Chairman of the Panchayat S. Gurdev Singh briefed the people about the ill-effects of the use of polythene carry bags and single-use plastics which includes disposable cups, plates, bowls and other cutlery items. They told the people that apart from adding pollution to the environment, the single-use plastic is badly affecting the health of the people and some chronic life-consuming diseases like cancer are increasing day by day. All the shopkeepers were specially invited to the meeting and Panchayat Khandwal distributed jute bags among the shopkeepers which costs Rs 14/- per bag. Speaking on the occasion Sonam Deep Singh told the gathering that the shopkeepers will charge Rs 7/- from the customers and Rs. 7/- will be paid by the Panchayat to the shopkeepers to overcome their deficit of Rs 7/-.
