J&K, Ladakh UTs formation countdown begins | | | Jammu, Oct 9 With the assent on August 9 of President Ram Nath Kovind, two Union Territories --Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh will come into existence on October 31-- the birth anniversary of the nation's first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. In an address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also sought to assuage concerns of the people, asserting that Jammu and Kashmir will not remain a Union Territory for long. According to the legislation, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will have a legislature like Puducherry and Ladakh will be a UT similar to Chandigarh, without legislature. In both the Union Territories, law and order and other key subjects will be with the Centre. The UT of Jammu and Kashmir will have a Lieutenant Governor and the maximum strength of its assembly will be of 107 which will be enhanced to 114 after a delimitation exercise. Twenty four seats of the Assembly will continue to remain vacant as they fall under Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK)
