Jhiri Mela to commence from Nov 12

JAMMU Oct 9: District Development Commissioner, Sushma Chauhan today reviewed the arrangements for smooth conduct of 3-day Jhiri Mela, starting from November 12.
The annual fair attracts devotees from all parts of the country who come to pay homage to farmer Saint Baba Jitto. The farmer saint Baba Jitto, alongwith his daughter Bua Kauri fought and sacrificed their lives to ensure justice to his people against the feudal system.
Senior Superintendent of Police Tejinder Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Assistant Commissioner General, Deputy Director Tourism, Sub District Magistrate Marh besides senior officers of Police, FCS&CA, Handicraft, Handloom, Fire & Emergency Services, PDD, PHE, PWD (R&B), Agriculture, Floriculture, Health, Rural Development, Information, Transport Department were present in the meeting.
The DDC briefly discussed the arrangements to be made by the concerned departments including facilities like adequate power, water supply, sanitation, availability of essentials, transport, fire tenders, besides medical facilities at the temples where Mela will be held.
The DDC stressed on synergy among different departments for ensuring adequate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the Mela. The meeting was informed that fool proof security would be made including installation of CCTVs at all the exit and entry points to keep check on suspicious movements.
A Joint Control Room will be established in the temple premises, where the officials of line departments will be present for the convenience of the devotees, the meeting was informed.
The DC directed the functionaries of R&B to complete the repair and improvement works for the convenience of the devotees. The PHE Department was asked to ensure adequate water supply with provision for additional water tanks and hand pumps. She also instructed Power Department to ensure proper lighting arrangements in addition to un-interrupted power supply during the mela days. JMC and Rural Development authorities were directed for ensuring proper sanitation in and around the venue.
The Tourism Department was asked to give wide publicity to the event and identify suitable locations for the installation of hoardings.
The DDC asked the officers to ensure that a foolproof mechanism is put in place to ensure that the devotees get the facilities for performing religious rituals.
Meanwhile, the departments were directed to put up stalls to create awareness about government schemes and agriculture-related activities among the visitors and locals.
She enjoined upon the officers to gear up preparations and make the historic event more alluring for the pilgrims and tourists. Among others present at the meeting were Sarpanchs, Panchs and representatives of Mela committee.
