Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 17: In a shocking incident, a first year student of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jammu died in college premises under mysterious circumstances. As per the details, Ashishraj Gupta, 17, son of Naginder Gupta, resident of Lucknow studying in first year in IIT Jagti, Nagrota Jammu fell unconscious in the college last week and was shifted to hospital where doctors declared him as brought dead. The eyewitness accounts mentioned on condition of anonymity that Ashish became unconscious on the afternoon of October 10 in front of the hostel building. He was taken to the duty doctor at IIT by his class fellows where there were no adequate medical facilities to treat him. The students informed that there were not even oxygen cylinders to give him some resuscitation. The oxygen cylinder kept in the campus was non-functional and therefore no proper preliminary treatment could be given.
The students alleged that the duty Doctor at IIT Jammu who is wife of some police officer of Jammu and Kashmir Police, showed negligence in providing him with the preliminary treatment. There was also no ambulance facility available on the campus so that the student could have been taken to the nearest hospital immediately. As there was no facility at IIT, the doctor told the students to take Ashish to Batra hospital. Instead of going herself, she sent the assistant. Moreover, his class fellows took him in a personal car to the hospital. As this route from IIT to Batra Hospital has huge traffic, there was apparently further delay in reaching the hospital owing to frequent heavy traffic. It is also revealed that the J&K Bank had donated IIT Jammu an ambulance few months ago but the administration requested the Bank to convert it into a van saying that there was no use of the ambulance in the college. Thus, the ambulance was returned to the Bank which got it converted into a van. The students alleged that Ashish died due to the sheer negligence of the IIT administration or else he would have been saved. After a delayed preliminary treatment, he was sent to government hospital Jammu where he was declared dead.
