20,000 govt schools in Jammu region lack proper infrastructure
Pathetic state of education in Jammu

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 17: Even as the authorities are seeking improvement in the quality of education in government run schools, thousands of schools in Jammu region lack basic facilities. No drinking water, toilet facilities are available in these schools not to speak of libraries and laboratories.
Sources said that 19273 schools in the region had no boundary wall and also lack proper staff and infrastructure.
The pathetic condition of these schools shows the extent of neglect towards the region by the authorities, said a government teacher preferring anonymity.
The Jammu schools not only lag behind on the academic front, no feats have been achieved in physical education. Around 5000 schools in the region have no playground, sources revealed.
The sordid tale does not end here. Around one hundred schools are headless and more than 1200 schools have no subject teachers, the sources disclosed.
Of 983 schools that recorded 30% result in various examinations, 476, according to sources are in Jammu region.
According to a survey conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), 80% government schools, most of them in Jammu region have no electric connection.
The ASSOCHAM has listed ten states with poor electric supply in government run schools and Jammu Kashmir ranks fourth.
"Since there is no electricity available in most of the schools, computer education is still a distant dream, an aggrieved parent said.
The pathetic condition of the schools was brought to the notice of the concerned authorities time and again but nothing has been done till date.
"For better results, you have to provide adequate staff and infrastructure. You cannot expect students reading in primitive schools to compete with students from 21st century institutions," an official of the education department while admitting the lapses said.
