Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 23: Although the State Government had taken an initiative of instilling life into the dying Jammu and Kashmir State Regional Transport Corporation by inducting passenger electric buses in Jammu but the purpose has not been yielding the desired result due to inadequate number of these vehicles.
Sources told Early Times that the around twenty electric buses were inducted into the fleet of JKSRTC Jammu and the same number of buses were given to Kashmir region this year in April. The main benefit of these vehicles was to protect the environment from air and noise pollution as these buses run on electric power and produces zero emission.
"The corporation has been plying these buses only on some selective routes in the city whereas the adjoining areas have been deprived of these facilities. The facility in these far off areas is provided on demand basis when some requests are received by the department otherwise the buses remain ply in the city. The main routes are from Railway Station to Jammu city etc.," they said.
Credible sources in the department informed that to cater services in other areas like RS Pura, Akhnoor, Bishnah, etc on regular basis the department needs 40 more electric buses to fulfill the demand but due to inadequate availability of vehicles the people have been facing difficult times.
"There are many areas where transport facility is very poor where private passenger vehicles don't give transport services and the local residents of those areas have raised the demand at appropriate platform on various occasions but remained unaddressed," they alleged.
The officials of the JKSRTC said that keeping in view the rising demands of the people, the department has taken up the matter to the higher authority and hopefully some positive results will come out in coming days.
