No difference in price of organic & inorganic basmati
Organic basmati growers feel cheated

Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 11: Though the former Chief Minister late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had laid thrust on organic basmati farming, but now the organic basmati growers have been feeling cheated as there is hardly any difference in price of organic and inorganic produce.
Pertinently, when the incumbent coalition government of PDP- BJP had assumed power in 2015, it government had announced that three border villages including Suchetgarh, Vidhipur and Kotranka Khurd would be developed for organic basmati farming on the pattern of Gujarat.
"However, the government had also made announcement for providing special aid to the farmers, who have been producing organic basmati in these said villages."
"But ironically, now the basmati growers of the villages feel cheated as the procurement agencies or Rice Millers have announced same price for inorganic and organic basmati that is 2500/ quintal", Sham Lal of Suchetgarh village said.
Expressing his agony another farmer Manjeet Singh said that during the announcement of organic basmati price villages in border belt by former Chief Minister, they were excited and had high hopes from the government announcement that the organic basmati farming would be proven as a miracle for border farming community who have been getting loses due to low price of the basmati for last many consecutive years.
"But it is so strange for us that the government still not declared Minimum Support Price for organic basmati growers so far and forced to sell-out their produce at peanut price", said Swaran Lal and added that undoubtedly, the farmers of entire region has been facing hardships due to low price of paddy for last many consecutive years but those who have been producing basmati in organic ways, have been come under debt due to high cost of production and lesser yield.
The distressed farmers said that marketing of organic basmati is main bottleneck for the farmers and if government doesn't remove that bottleneck of marketing and doesn't fix MSP for basmati growers, resulting in near future none of the farmer will adopt organic farming techniques.
