Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 12: After remaining shut for over 99 days, Rail services in Kashmir resumed on Tuesday. Railway services were suspended for over three months after being suspended due to security reasons in view of the Centre's decision to abrogate Article 370 on August 5.
The train service in the valley was suspended due to security reasons on the morning of 5 August - hours before the Centre announced its decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution and bifurcate the erstwhile state into two Union territories.
As per the officials, "The trains started chugging after the Divisional administration and security agencies last week gave a nod for resumption following security review that was followed by track inspections and trial runs".
On Tuesday, initially, only two pairs of trains started running from Srinagar to Baramulla from 10 am today, which would culminate at 3-15 pm on a daily basis. With a little number of passengers on day one, these operations would be enhanced in accordance with improvement in weather conditions and spread of information among the public intending to travel, officials said.
Chugging of trains was resumed after track inspections and trial runs in presence of senior Railway officers
As per the sources the train made only two trips on the Baramulla-Srinagar stretch as authorities have directed Railways to ply trains between 10 am and 3 pm only due to security reasons.
The Railways conducted the trial run of the service on the stretch on Monday for the first time in over three months since the unannounced shutdown in the valley. While as, the official said the Srinagar-Banihal stretch of the railway line would resume in a few days after checking track safety and conducting trial runs.
Meanwhile, a sigh of relief was witnessed by train passengers. Now I don't have left early to reach my destination. Now my all problems of travelling have solved. Moreover, I will now pay a little amount to travel from Srinagar to Baramulla and vice versa, said Zahid, a student.
We were suffering a lot, now with the resume of train services; we will now be able to travel around the valley within no time. It is a good step and now small businessmen whose business in far-flung areas can now reach their distance and it will somehow improve the situation in Valley, said Qulsoom, another passenger.
