One-way traffic resumes on Srinagar-Jammu highway
11/17/2019 10:40:49 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 17: Only one-way traffic was resumed on the national highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country after remaining suspended for two days due to landslides and shooting stones.
Meanwhile, the national highway, linking Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir valley also remained closed for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday due to avalanches at several places following fresh snowfall since Thursday.
The 86-km-long historic Mughal road remained closed for the 12th day on Sunday due to snowfall. The road is seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway which connects Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch.
A traffic police official told this morning that traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended on Thursday night due to huge landslide at Digdol in Ramban area.
But, due to continued shooting stone, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) could undertake the landslides clearing operation only on Friday morning, he said, adding that due to fresh landslides coupled with shooting stones in the area, the highway could not be restored.
However, he said the highway was put through last evening and stranded vehicles were cleared. ''Today traffic will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction,'' he said.
The Traffic official said there was fresh snowfall on historic Mughal road during the past 24 hours. The road is closed for the past 12 days due to accumulation of several feet of snow.
Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Leh national highway remained closed for traffic for the fourth day on Sunday due to fresh snowfall at Meenmarg and Zojila pass and Sonamarg. The Border Roads Organisation, responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has started snow clearance operation from both Sonmarg and Meenmarg sides.
