Early Times Report
srinagar, Nov 18: The power distribution system in Jammu & Kashmir has always been found wanting and it is probably only place in the world where green trees lie close to the transmission towers having high tension (HT) lines over them.
Sources told Early Times that it is due to this reason only that dozens of villages in Kashmir especially North Kashmir continue to be without power for the past 12 days now. People living in these villages are without power since November 7 when Kashmir recorded heavy snowfall.
"It is quite perplexing and surprising that trees have been planted near the power transmission towers across length and breadth of the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir. As soon as there is heavy snowfall or windstorm these trees fall on the transmission towers thus leading to snapping of power supply to numerous areas," said sources.
Sources said that Lieutenant Governor Girsh Chandra Murmu led administration should order a probe as who allowed for the planting of trees near the transmission towers. They said that responsibility should be fixed so that action is taken and such things are not done in the future.
"It is important that enquiry is ordered so that the responsible people are taken to task. This would also ensure that such things are not repeated in future. If no action is taken then people of the union territory would have to suffer on the energy front as the transmission towers would collapse on frequent occasions," said sources.
It would be in place to mention here that Chief Engineer (Distribution) Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) Hashmat Qazi has been saying that North Kashmir bore brunt of November 7 snowfall as many areas in this part of Kashmir are without power since the transmission towers have collapsed at many places.
"Not to talk of rural and far flung areas transmission towers of power are found erected close to houses in the Srinagar district as well. Such transmission towers are found close to houses in areas like Sanat Nagar, Hyderpora, Nowgam, Bemina, Buchpora, Hazratbal and Zakura. One cannot rule out an accident as and when something awry takes place," said sources.
Some years back few students of a school got killed when a transmission line fell on a school at Zainakote in the outskirts of Srinagar city. The authorities did not learnt any lesson from this unfortunate incident and no steps whatsoever have been taken to shift the transmission towers and lines to places where there is no habitation.
Sources said that successive governments in Jammu & Kashmir have failed to do their bit in this regard adding that inaction is jeopardizing the lives of thousands living in the union territory. They said that swift action is needed so that human lives are not compromised and at same time there is no power disruption.
