11/19/2019 10:04:58 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 19: The national highway, only road linking Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir valley and historic 86-km-long Mughal road, remained closed though massive snow clearance operation has already been started by the authorities.
However, one-way traffic will continue to ply till further orders on the national highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country to avoid traffic jam and accidents.
The 86-km-long historic Mughal road remained closed for the 14th day on Tuesday due to accumulation of snow following snowfall last week. The road which is seen as alternative to Srinagar-Jammu national highway connects Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch.
A traffic police official said this morning that the Beacon authorities have already started operation to clear the accumulated snow and avalanches at several places on Srinagar-Leh national highway. The highway remained closed for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday, he said adding efforts are being made to put through the highway as soon as possible. However, he said, fresh traffic will be allowed only after clearing stranded vehicles on both sides of the Zojila pass.
Normally the highway was being closed for winter from November Ist every year. However, for the past over five years, the road remained open till there is heavy snowfall and road surface gets slippery due to minus temperature.
He said only one-way traffic will continue to ply on Srinagar-Jammu national highway on Tuesday.
Today traffic, including trucks loaded with essentials and vehicles carrying passengers, will ply from Jammu to Srinagar, he said adding no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction.
