Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Nov 22: The early onset of winter in Kashmir has given enough indication that the upcoming months would be hard one and it would be difficult for the people to get through the crisis that come up during the winter period.
Like last year this year too Kashmir has witnessed virtually very little autumn and autumn related activities. There has been an early onset of winter with the Kashmir valley already receiving heavy snowfall in the first week of this month. In the Kashmir valley the autumn season at least lasts for two months, but this time around the schedule has gone topsy-turvy. The autumn season has virtually been decimated and the winter season has set in advance. There is no harm with winter, but the problems associated with the season take toll on the people of Kashmir. "The winter is more severe in many other parts of the world, but these places are laced with all the facilities. Here in Kashmir there are no facilities for the people and it is due to this reason that people are somewhat scared of the winter season," said Manzoor Ahmad, a resident of Nishat.
The first casualty of the winter season is the power with the power supply getting snapped as and when there is some snowfall. With very little accountability the officials responsible for restoring the power take days and weeks together to make the life comfortable for the people of Kashmir on the energy front.
"In the past we had heard that the overhead transmission system would be replaced by underground transmission system in Kashmir. However, very little progress has been made in this regard. Not to talk of major snowfall a minor snowfall makes the system go haywire when it comes to power supply in Kashmir," said Mohammad Ibrahim, a resident of Buchpora.
The frequent closure of Srinagar-Jammu national highway during the winter season is yet another glaring issue that comes up in Kashmir. The people of Kashmir are dependent on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway for everything since no alternate highway is available to them.
"The highway has already remained closed for many days during this month and one can predict for worse in this regard in the near future. The government should come up with some solution in this regard so that people of valley face few problems during the months of grueling winter," said Shakeel Ahmad, a resident of Budgam.
The people in general say that despite claims from the divisional administration that adequate stock is in place masses have to feel heat as the ground situation is totally different. They said administration needs to be more responsive so that they are aware to the situation and take corrective measures as well.
