Cigarettes smuggling bid foiled, Rs 3.42 lakh fine imposed

Jammu, Nov 30: Excise department foiled bid of smuggling of cigarettes at Lakhanpur and imposed Rs 3.42 lakh fine on the alleged smugglers.
During week long drive against illegal export, import of cigarettes and cement in and around Toll Post Lakhanpur and other Minor Toll Posts, Excise team laid several nakas for tax evasion. During the course four vehicle were intercepted and seized.
One vehicle bearing No. PB06E2058 was intercepted at Peerbaba Gandyal road which was found loaded with cigarettes weighing 386.54 kg transporting illegally. The vehicle was seized and penalty to the tune of Rs.3,42,686/- was imposed and recovered from defaulter. The vehicle was latter on handed over to State Taxes Department for further action at their end.
Three other vehicles JK08E8263, JK02BP9984 and JK08F0187 were intercepted from Kote punnu-Rajbagh route they were found loaded with cement transporting without paying Toll. Thus penalty to the tune of Rs. 32560 each respectively total amounting to Rs. 97,680/- was imposed and recovered from the defaulters of these vehicles under Sections 8 and 13 of the J&K Levy of Tolls Act, 1995.
The whole operation was supervised by Pardeep Singh KAS, Deputy Excise Commissioner, Toll Post, Lakhanpur and carried out by Excise and Taxation Officer Sandeep Gupta, Sajjad Sofi and Rohit Sharma alongwith team of Inspectors Bilal Ahmed, Dheeraj Kumar and Sanjeev Khajuria, Sub-Inspectors Kanwaljeet Shan, Milan Gupta and Ravinder Singh and Manzoor Chalkoo and Excise Head/Guards Rajesh Kumar, Om Dutt, Majid Mir and Devinder Singh. M Raju, Excise Commissioner, J&K applauded the sustained enforcement efforts of the Toll Post and enjoined the Excise officials to work with same zeal and enthusiasm in the future also.
