Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 1: The Jammu & Kashmir administration recently hinted at the possibility about internet shutdown in the Valley getting prolonged due to security reasons. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court that internet curbs in Kashmir are "must to fight the enemies within and the ones sitting across the Line of Control."
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "One can understand the need for keeping internet shut in Kashmir but one fails to comprehend why mobile internet has been blocked in Jammu region?"
He said, "There are lakhs of mobile internet subscribers in Jammu region but suffering due to problems in Kashmir. When Government of India reorganized Jammu & Kashmir on August 5, people of Jammu were expecting that Jammu would be given a separate statehood but Jammu was again clubbed with Kashmir and turned into a Union Territory. Since the day J&K has become a Union Territory, people of Jammu have been deprived of mobile internet services and no one is telling them why the services are not being restored? People at the helm need to understand that Jammu is not Kashmir. People of Jammu have stood with the Government of India since 1947. Whenever Pakistan has tried to push in terrorists into Jammu division, people of this region have never allowed them to succeed in their nefarious designs. Jammuites are nationalists to core and they cannot be compared with others."
An observer said the wrong notion that internet is working on all the platforms in Jammu region needs to be dispelled. "The Bharatiya Janta Party which swept the 2014 Assembly polls in Jammu by winning 25 seats and then winning the two parliamentary seats in Jammu division in 2019 General Elections has maintained silence over people of Jammu being deprived of mobile internet. It seems BJP leaders fear that they could face disciplinary action for opening their mouth or they are least bothered what people are facing," he said adding that these leaders should bear in mind that sooner or later elections will be held and at that point of time people will ask them direct questions. And why they were deprived of the internet could become a big question."It is in place to mention here that despite no mobile internet services being available in the Jammu region subscribers are paying for the services which are not working.
Another analyst said, "During the past four months not a single incident of violence has taken place across Jammu region. The ban on mobile internet services is unjustified. People of Jammu cannot be made to suffer for the sake of Kashmir."
