Jharkhand Polls: Litmus test for BJP
12/2/2019 10:35:43 PM
After facing difficult political situations in Haryana and Maharashtra, the ongoing Assembly polls in Jharkhand have become a do or die battle for Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
In Haryana, the BJP managed to stitch an alliance with Dushyant Chautala and retained the power but in Maharashtra it couldn't do the same as its oldest ally Shiv Sena turned hostile after BJP refused to share the Chief Minister's post with it for two and a half years. As on date Shiv Sena is ruling the Maharashtra with the support of NCP and Congress as all the three parties came together to keep the BJP away from the power.
The BJP after sweeping 2019 Parliamentary polls was expected to win Assembly polls in Maharashtra and Haryana comfortably but out of the two states it lost one and in another i.e. Haryana BJP had to enter into a deal with Dushyant Chautala to keep the opposition out of power. Not many people expected that BJP would be in a tight spot in both these important states.
Jharkhand is a small Assembly with 81 seats and the incumbent BJP Chief Minister Raghubar Das is seeking a second term. The results of the elections will be declared on December 23. The BJP is fighting independently on most of the seats with the hope that it won't end up in a mess this time around.
Below par performance of the BJP in Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly polls is an indication that General Elections are different from the Assembly elections which are fought on the basis of local issues. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged as an undisputed leader of new India but when it comes to Assembly elections in the states situation changes.
Congress which stood decimated in 2019 Parliamentary polls seems rejuvenated due to the recent developments in Haryana and Maharashtra. The BJP has to turn the tables on Congress in Jharkhand polls to reverse the losses it suffered in the recently held Assembly polls in the two important states of the country.
The BJP had swept the 2019 Parliamentary polls in Jharkhand and it is hoping that it would repeat its performance in the ongoing Assembly polls but opposition making a comeback has unnerved the BJP leaders and they are keeping their fingers crossed. All of them know it very well that if the party keeps on losing the Assembly elections in the states it can have a direct impact over the central government in New Delhi.
