Kashmir- centric leaders threat to peace?
12/6/2019 10:40:39 PM
Advisor to Lieutenant Governor Farooq Khan recently said that politicians in Kashmir were jailed to save the lives of people. Prior to August 5, Kashmir-centric leaders did make lot of noise about something big going to happen and they tried their best to instigate the people to come out on the streets and stage protests. The tech-savvy Kashmir-centric leaders made full use of social media networking sites to tell the people that Kashmir is a dispute and its accession with the Union of India is temporary. Had they remained free after August 5 when the Government of India (GoI) announced its decision to reorganize Jammu & Kashmir there was every possibility about these leaders flaring up the passions by telling people that hitting the streets is the only option. When debate over J&K's reorganization was going on in the Parliament, the parliamentarians enquired about the MP from Srinagar and former Chief Minister of J&K, Dr Farooq Abdullah. Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed the House he has not been placed under detention and he is the free man. Soon after Shah's statement in the House, Farooq Abdullah came out of his Gupkar residence in Srinagar and threatened that GoI's decision to reorganize J&K will have far reaching consequences. "Let my people come out, everything will burn," Farooq told reporters at that point of time. Soon after his threat he was put under house detention and since then he continues to remain confined within his home. In September, he was booked under Public Safety Act and his Gupkar residence was declared as Sub-Jail. Two other former Chief Ministers of J&K, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were placed under detention just few hours before the GoI announced its decision on Jammu & Kashmir in the Parliament. Both these leaders prior to August 5 were very active on social media. Mehbooba Mufti had put fiery post on her twitter handle. She had warned that any fiddling with J&K's status would mean setting entire J&K ablaze. On the other hand, Omar Abdullah made every possible attempt to tell the people that Kashmir is slipping out of their hands and time has come for them to come out and agitate. Had they succeeded in their designs many lives could have been lost. Had they not been placed under detention they could have provided a handle to the neighbouring country to implement its nefarious designs.
