Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 13: Even after the assurance given by the Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina to roll back Toll plaza at Sarore, uncertainty prevailing among the people owing to the steady functioning of Toll plaza.
The NHAI has inaugurated the new toll plaza at Sarore in Samba district and said "the toll plazas are the strength of the roads and all the money collected through tolls will be utilized in giving better road infrastructures in the country."
The setting up of toll collecting centre at Sarore which has caused a discontent among local populace is still in notoriety as amid the claims of Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina demanding immediate abolishment, the Toll Plaza at Sarore is still running collecting toll tax from the commuters.
A daily commuter travelling from Samba to Katra rued with early times that this is the second toll plaza to pass enroute to Katra. He added that people are already been paying toll at the Ban toll plaza, some 25 kms from Jammu city and adding to their expenses, the highway users will now have to shell out Rs 65 (one-way journey) at Sarore (in case of private cars) while traveling on the Samba to Katra route.
A section of transporters operating bus service between Katra and Kathua and vice versa told Early Times that there was already one toll plaza functioning at Ban on Jammu-Katra highway and another has been made functional at Sarore while one more toll plaza on Jammu-Kathua highway is being made functional shortly at Hira Nagar in Kathua district.
"The establishment of additional toll plazas will increase the expenses incurred upon the transporters besides increasing cost of Diesal, which will definitely effect not only travellers but also operators to a great extent e public transport along with those travelling in the personal cars", said an operator.
He also added that installing more toll plazas in the Jammu region will add fuel to the fire after imposing heavy traffic penalties by amending the Motor Vehicles Act as well as increasing one time token tax fees to 11 percent of cost of vehicle.
It is pertinent to mention here that earlier in a two-page letter addressed to the Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina highlighted the resentment among the people over the "ill thoughtout" decision of local officers of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). "The distance between these toll plazas is in violation of the prescribed distance limit. They are at a far shorter distance inter-se than permissible. Further the plaza at Sarore is very badly designed," Raina has said in the letter demanding its scrapping.
Several attempts to contact Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina went in vain as despite repeated attempts he was not available.
