Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran threatens corporator in Srinagar not to support BJP, alleges party

SRINAGAR, Dec 14: Days after the news surfaced that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is lobbying hard for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), it has now come to terms that current Deputy Mayor Sheik Imran is threatening corporator and asking them not to support BJP despite being in detention.
BJP had decided to go for the floor test after the party had claimed that the independent corporator is supporting them and are looking for new Mayor and Deputy Mayor in SMC as development work is being halted. Deputy Mayor SMC Sheikh Imran is currently logged at MLA hostel along with the other mainstream leaders following the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5.
However, the Bharatiya Janata Party is claiming that Sheik Imran despite being in jail is calling the SMC corporator and is threatening them not to support BJP at any cost else they will have to face repercussions.
Talking to Early Times, a top BJP functionary said, "We had decided to go floor test as we had the support of corporator as many corporator wanted new Mayor and Deputy Mayor and they were supporting the party".
He alleged, "Today in the morning, an independent corporator, who is supporting BJP got a call from Sheikh Imran and then he threatened him and told him not to support BJP. And, if he does not then there will be dire consequences".
BJP top functionary further added, "We came to know that Sheikh Imran is threatening our corporator. And, we want to know that how can he make a phone call despite being in jail. What are the administration and government doing"
He added that later District president BJP headed by Arif Raja along with other corporators went to the police station and told them how come can deputy mayor make a phone call and threaten corporator and we demanded to write an FIR. "And ironically, the police did not go for FIR fearing that they have to give an answer about the use of the mobile phone by deputy mayor", he alleged.
"If the matter is not resolved then the matter will be taken to higher authorities as it not a small thing that a person is in jail and is threatening people living outside", he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that Jammu and Kashmir police had earlier found 11 mobile phones from the MLA hostel where more than 30 mainstream leaders are detained including Peoples Conference President Sajad Lone and Shah Faesal.
