Srinagar-Jammu highway remains closed due to snowfall, landslides
1/14/2020 6:54:10 PM

Srinagar, Jan 14
The 270-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained closed for the second day on Tuesday due to accumulation of several feet of snow and fresh landslides, triggered by rain.
There is no chance of reopening of 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway and historic 86-km-long Mughal road before April-May following heavy to very snowfall besides slippery conditions.
The highway, the only road connecting Union Territory (UT) Ladakh with Kashmir and Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, and Anantnag-Kishtwar road also remained closed for the past 35 days due to snow and slippery conditions.
Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained suspended due to more than two to three feet of fresh snowfall at Qazigund, Jawahar tunnel, Banihal and Shaitan Nallah. There were also fresh landslides and shooting stone at over a dozen places between Ramban and Ramsu, official sources told UNI.
They said the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has pressed into service sophisticated machines to clear the snow and landslides since early this morning.
They said once snow and landslide are cleared only Jammu-bound vehicles will be allowed to move from different places on this side of the Jawahar tunnel.
There are about 4000 Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) stranded on this side of the tunnel for the past several days. They will be allowed to move towards Jammu once a green signal is received, the sources said.
Meanwhile, despite assurance by the authorities that enough stock of essentials was available in the valley, people alleged shortage of gas cylinders, meat, fresh vegetables and wheat flour 'atta' and other eatables.
They further alleged that there is no checking of prices of essentials which is sky rocketing after highway gets closed. Frequent suspension of traffic on the highway has become a daily routine since NHAI started road widening, particularly between Ramban and Ramsu.
