After Dineshwar Sharma, will GOI appoint one more interlocutor?
Amid talks of JK’s political engagement, chances of new emissary gaining ground

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 17: There are questions being raised over whether the government will once again made appointment of interlocutor as more than two months have passed since GOI appointed interlocutor Dineshwar Sharma was the new administrator of Lakshadweep on October 25, last year.
On October 23, 2017, the government of India appointed Sharma as a Special Representative. He was tasked to carry forward the dialogue process with all the stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir.
However, things seem to have drastically changed vis-a-vis Shrama’s role as an interlocutor since June 19, 2018. That was the time when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pulled out of the alliance with People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Sharma, who otherwise used to dominate the headlines of several dallies in Jammu and Kashmir subtly went into oblivion with no news of his any activity or meeting any person of political allegiance.
Sharma is a 1976-batch Kerala cadre IPS officer. He was also the chief of India’s Intelligence Bureau. He was also appointed as an interlocutor for talks with Assam-based insurgent groups.
On October 25, last year, President Ram Nath Govind appointed Sharma as the new administrator of Lakshadweep. Now, when more than two months have passed since the order was issued, there are questions being raised over whether the government will once again make an appointment of an interlocutor in Jammu and Kashmir that too at a time when peace and normalcy is desperately needed on ground.
Sharma’s tenure witnessed many breakthrough movements in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape with announcement of Ramadhan ceasefire, withdrawal of cases against stone pelters toping the list.
Sharma had been in open stating that as far as the sentiment in Kashmir is concerned, it can be addressed only if we embrace people with an open heart, about which our Prime Minister and Home Minister have already talked. He had advocated that more Kashmiri people, including youth, should visit other parts of the country and they should be shown the same love and affection so that they get a feeling of belonging to the nation. “Similarly, more people from the rest of the country should visit J&K, see its natural beauty, and enjoy the affection and hospitality of the local people,” he said in his 2017 statement.
However, there were many serious voices terming Sharma’s role as limited and confined. Former RAW Chief A.S. Daulat while commenting on Sharma’s role as interlocutor had stated that if his role would not have been confined, he would have been able to break much ice on ground in Kashmir.
Now, when the political engagement is something on which the government is laying much emphasis, it is widely being speculated that the government may appoint an interlocutor once again that could act as good will ambassador to address peoples concerns at large.
