Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 18: Border towns of Keran, Karnah, Machil and Gurez besides dozens of other far-flung and remote villages, including those near the Line of Control (LoC), remained cut off from their district and tehsil headquarters due to heavy to very heavy snowfall on Monday.
Power generator in a shed was damaged in a snow avalanche while efforts are being made to airlift several people from border town of Gurez to Bandipora. These persons were injured in snow avalanches, official sources said.
All the roads leading to border towns of Keran, Karnah, Machil and dozens of other far-flung and remote villages, including those near LoC, remained closed due to very heavy snowfall for three days from Monday, an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Kupwara said.
He said there was five to seven feet of snow accumulated on these roads, connecting the cut off areas with district headquarters, Kupwara.
Efforts are going on to clear the snow and put through these roads, which remained closed during winter months in the past. However, this winter all out measures are being taken to keep these roads open.
Large number of people are stranded in these border areas and Kupwara.
However, authorities said enough stock was available in these areas for winter months.
The border town of Gurez, surrounded by Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) from three sides, remained cut off from district headquarters Bandipora. There was more than six feet of snow accumulated at Razdan pass on the road, official sources said.
They said snow clearance operation has been launched to put through the road which remained closed for winter months in the past.
Sources said majority areas in Gurez plunged into darkness after a power generator in a shed was damaged in snow avalanche. The entire area is under huge snow avalanche , hitting power supply, they said adding efforts are going to restore the power supply.
Meanwhile, they said, several persons were injured due to snow avalanche in Gurez and other cut off areas.
These injured persons would be airlifted to Bandipora for specialized treatment, they said.
