| Road to Karnah reopens; border towns of Keran, Machil, Gurez remain cut-off | | | Early Times Report

Roads to dozens of far-flung and remote villages, including border town of Karnah, reopened on Sunday after remaining closed for seven days due to slippery road conditions and accumulation of several feet of snow.
However, three main roads Kupwara-Machil and Kupwara-Keran in north Kashmir remained closed for the eighth successive day due to accumulation of six to seven feet of snow.
Traffic on road leading to border town Gurez, which is surrounded by Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) from three sides, remained suspended for the past 18 days due to slippery road conditions and accumulation of several feet of snow.
''Traffic on Kupwara-Karnah road was allowed to ply on Sunday morning after improvement in weather and clearance of about 5 feet of snow,'' an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Kupwara, said over the phone.
He said vehicular movement was also allowed towards some other remote and far flung areas which are adjacent to Karnah.
Meanwhile, he said snow clearing operation is going on a war-footing on Kupwara-Keran and Kupwara-Machil roads. ''It will take many days to clear about 7 to 8 feet of snow at some places on these roads,'' he added.
Border towns of Keran, Karnah, Machil and dozens of far-flung and remote villages were cut off from the district headquarter on Monday due heavy snowfall.
Razdan pass, connecting Gurez, Neeru and dozens of other areas near LoC with district headquarters Bandipora, remained closed due to accumulation of snow and fresh snowfall.
A police official saidthat about 5 feet of snow was accumulated at some places on the road. ''About 80 per cent of the road has been damaged and it is highly unlikely that these areas will be reconnected to district headquarters before March,'' he added.
