Srinagar, Jan 20: Security forces on Monday killed three Hizbul Mujahideen militants, including a police deserter, who had deserted Jammu and Kashmir Police in 2018 and decamped with eight AK assault rifles from the official residence of a legislator.
According to reports, security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Wacchi area of Shopian district following information about presence of militants.
They said that initially terrorists were asked to surrender but they opened fire towards security forces' positions which triggered an encounter between the forces and them
"In the ensuing encounter, three terrorists of Hizbul Mujahideen were killed," a police official said.
One of the slain terrorists was been identified as Adil Ahmad, a special police officer who had deserted the Jammu and Kashmir Police in 2018 and decamped with eight AK assault rifles from the official residence of then MLA Wacchi Aijaz Ahmad Mir from Jawahar Nagar area of the city, the official said.
The other two terrorists were identified as Wasim Wani district commander of Shopain and Jahangir Ahmad.
GOC Victor Force said that the killing of three militants was a huge blow to the Hizbul Mujahideen outfit and it will impact their recruitment process.
He said that trio were involved in a series of crimes that they have peperated the area and unleashed upon civilian population.
“Wasim Wani, who had joined militant ranks since January 2017, was involved in killing of drivers in Shopain district,” he said.
GOC said that slain militants were trying to recruit more youngsters and their elimination will impact the outfit’s recruitment goals.
He said that around 130 local militants were active in South Kashmir.
