Cong could not muster guts to demand restoration of Art 370
1/21/2020 1:03:14 AM

Early times report

Jammu, Jan 20: Notwithstanding stand taken by the party across the country, Congress leadership could not muster guts to include demand of restoration of Article 370 in the Indian Constitution to restore “special status” of J&K. People were expecting that Congress in its state executive committee meeting held at Jammu on January 16 and 17, would raise the demand of bringing back Article 370 but none of the leader even raise this demand after the meeting. Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, who had vociferously opposed abrogation of Article 370 in the Rajya Sabha on August 5, 2019, has avoided speaking on this issue in Jammu.
Credible sources in the party revealed that some Valley based leaders had raised this issue during the two-day long meeting but majority of the leaders were of the view that “Article 370 is dead now” so there was no need to raise demand of its restoration. And more importantly Congress leadership has realized across the country that supporting Article 370 at this point of time would be proved counterproductive for the party in the whole country so it is better to forget this issue once for all.
Credible sources said while finalizing the resolution J&K Congress leaders get the document vetted from the central leaders who gave their consent not to include demand of restoring 370 in the resolution because party has, by and large, admitted that this Article is not going to be brought back at any cost so it is better to avoid this issue.
Sources further revealed that party leaders were of the view instead of demanding its restoration the party should rather raise demand of statehood and job and land rights for natives of J&K. It was only after thorough discussions among leaders that demand of restoring Article 370 was skipped and party incorporated the demand of statehood in its resolution.
