Srinagar takes lead as JMC fails Jammu in sanitation
1/21/2020 1:03:26 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 20: In a major embarrassment for the Jammu Municipal Corporation and the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) whose Mayor heads the JMC, the summer capital of Srinagar has been ranked first among the cleanest cities and towns in Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials said Srinagar has been ranked first among 78 urban local bodies in Jammu and Kashmir in Swatch Survekshan League SSL 2020.
In the pan-India cleanliness survey conducted under the banner of SSL 2020, Srinagar has also shown an improvement in level of cleanliness jumping to rank 45 from 448 position of 2018.
The survey was conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the aegis of Swatch Bharat Mission.
Interestingly, Srinagar was declared as Open Defecation Free by the government on January 2, 2020.
While the Jammu lost the first position, the experts are putting the blame on the JMC.
The JMC has long been accused of failing to keep the Jammu city clean upto the mark.
“Jammu is not only the winter capital but is traditionally known as the City of Temples. Given this unique position, the government should have been more concerned about the cleanliness in the city of temples but unfortunately their concern is interests of the other region,” said an official on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said the “poor performance” of Jammu in the Swatch Bharat Abhiyan was a main reason that one of the top most officials posted at the JMC was recently transferred.
Official sources said the blame equally goes on the Housing and Development Department for having failed to take measures so that Jammu could have fetched the numero uno position.
“They(Housing) department could have made JMC more accountable but the department has failed,” said one official on the condition of anonymity.
Eyebrows are also being raised over the performance of the BJP corporators in the JMC as the civic body is headed by mayor from the right wing party.
Observers said “Given the elected corporators with Mayor from BJP, the party had to be more responsible towards the civic body and its operations. But when even the cleanliness is not up to the mark, the performance of the party in its pledge of making Jammu s model city can only be imagined.”
When contacted the JMC officials downplayed the matter saying “sanitation is being improved.” “Jammu is among the cleanest cities,” the officials said.
