Delhi polls do or die for BJP
1/21/2020 11:13:48 PM
With just few days left for Assembly elections to be held in New Delhi, political parties are making every possible attempt to lure the voters. Incumbent Delhi Chief Minister and the Aam Aadmi Party chief, Arvind Kejriwal has issued a “guarantee card” to assure the people that if he is reelected the measures announced by him will continue.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is putting in all the efforts to win the Assembly polls in the National Capital. Politically these elections are of great significance to the BJP. The performance of saffron party has not been upto the mark in the State polls after winning the 2019 general elections. Of the States where Assembly elections were held after the formation of NDA 2.0, the BJP has only been able to form the government in Haryana that too with the support of Dushyant Chautala. In Mahrashtara and Jharkhand it was forced to sit in the opposition.
For the BJP fight for Delhi is a “do or die battle” if it fails to win the National Capital then the critics who have been claiming that the BJP has failed to deliver as a regional party will stand vindicated. During the past few years a notion has been created that in general elections people vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he has emerged as the undisputed leader. The general elections are fought on the national issues, while the polls in States are contested on the local issues. The dismal performance of the BJP leaders in the States has left the local leaders of the saffron party red faced. They seem to have no answers for the poor performance of their party in the State elections.
Whatever said and done the BJP may not find it easy to win Delhi assembly elections. Kejriwal despite his shortcomings has done many good works in the National Capital during the past five years. People of Delhi have hailed his initiatives like providing 200 units of electricity free to every household and providing clean drinking water. The BJP to win Delhi elections will have to do something out of box as it’s not going to be an easy task to dislodge Kejriwal, who won the last assembly elections with a thumping majority.
In the given circumstances, the Congress seems to be figuring nowhere in the political scene of Delhi. It’s trying to take refuge in CAA issue but may not find it easy to sneak in.
