Violation of Bio-Medical Waste Management continues in Rajouri

NOWSHERA, Jan 21: The Government Hospitals across Rajouri district have allegedly been functioning in gross violation of Bio-Medical Waste Management and Handling Rules thereby posing serious health threat to patients as well as the environment.
Sources told Early Times that the government hospitals in Rajouri, Nowshera, Sunderbani, and Kalakote tehsils have no proper mechanism for safe disposal of bio-medical waste generated in the hospitals. “The laid down norms for the disposal of different kind of wastes generated in hospitals are not followed by the respective hospital administrations. The waste generated in the hospital is not properly segregated and dumped in an open space,” they said.
They said further adding that there are generally different coloured bins installed in the hospitals which are used for general waste, bio waste, waste generated by nursing staff etc but it has been observed in most of the hospitals, the wastes are dumped in one bin, which creates infection within the hospitals premises. “There are 4-5 types of wastes which are generated in hospitals and have to be collected in, different colour bins for segregation. The Bio-Medical Waste generated during operation has to be handled very carefully by disposing it off in incinerators, or burying it but on the contrary waste is thrown in the open, at time in river without its proper disposal resulting, stray dogs, birds can be seen eating these human organs,” they said.
Pollution Control Board (PCB), which is mandated to ensure proper implementation of Bio-medical Waste Management and Handling Rules in every government hospitals, seems to be mute spectator and allowing these institutions to play with human lives, they alleged. Regional Director PCB, Dr Nadeem Hussain Shah, informed that there is huge shortage of fund with the department for its implementation. Astonishingly, when contacted BMO Nowshera, Dr Sat Pal said that he didn’t have time due to a VIP’s visit in the district.
