Centre takes control, local politicians sidelined
1/21/2020 11:38:23 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Jan 21: Centre sending 36 union ministers to Jammu and Kashmir to kickstart the development projects across the Union Territory seems to be a hint that local politicians have been sidelined and they will have to prove their worth before being re-inducted into the system.
The Central Ministers reaching out to the people in different areas is a clear message that the Government of India wants to manage the newly carved out Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir in its own way.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “It looks like that Centre has made up its mind to ignore the brokers so that the benefits of various developmental schemes do reach the people at the grassroots.”
He said, “People at the helm seem to have arrived on the consensus that the benefits of the centrally sponsored schemes have failed to reach the people for whom these schemes were meant for.”
An observer said that the local politicians will have to prove their worth before they are once again given an opportunity to make their presence felt on the ground. “Till now, Delimitation Commission has not been constituted. It means that assembly elections won’t be held in the J&K UT for some more time,” he added.
The observer said, “The government has tightened its noose around the Kashmir centric politicians and a few leaders have already fallen in the net of the anti-graft agencies. Recently
He said that leaders sitting in New Delhi have already made it clear that Kashmir centric politicians, who have amassed assets disproportionate to their sources of income, won’t be spared.
Another analyst said, “It looks like that the Centre has already defined the broader contours of how to handle Jammu and Kashmir. Leaders from Jammu region too seem to have an uphill task at their hands. It won’t be easy for them to tell the Centre that they are the only options. The times have changed completely and message seems clear that only people with clean image will be entertained as all the rules of the games stand altered.”
