Operation on war-footing to restore traffic to far- flung, remote areas in Kashmir
1/22/2020 10:13:39 PM
Early Times report

Srinagar, Jan 22 Snow clearance operation was on Wednesday initiated on a war-footing to restore traffic to dozens of far-flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC), which remain cutoff due to accumulation of several feet of snow.
Border town of Karnah and dozens of other far-flung and remote areas remained cutoff on Wednesday for the second successive day due to fresh moderate to heavy snowfall during the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, there was no relief for people living in cutoff border towns of Keran, Machil and dozens of far-flung and remote villages, including those near the LoC, where snow clearance operation to restore traffic to these areas was suspended due to fresh snowfall. Traffic on road leading to border town Gurez, which is surrounded by Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) from three sides, remained suspended for the past 21 days on Wednesday due to slippery road conditions and accumulation of several feet of snow.
‘’Snow clearance operation to restore traffic on Kupwara-Karnah, Kupwara-Keran and Kupwara-Machil roads has started on a war-footing from Wednesday,’’ an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Kupwara, said over phone.
He said traffic to Karnah is likely to be restored on Thursday or Friday after snow is cleared on the roads. However, he said restoration of traffic on roads to Keran, Machil and other remote areas will take more time as about 7 to 8 feet of snow has accumulated at various places.
“The restoration of traffic on these roads has been further delayed due to fresh snowfall. Several inches of snow during the last 24 hours has added to already 7 to 8 feet of accumulated snow on these roads,” he added.
Border towns of Keran, Machil and dozens of far-flung and remote villages were cut off from the district headquarter on January 13 owing to heavy snowfall.
