Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 23: The elementary schools’ infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir is in a very pathetic state with 63 percent schools are still without electricity connection. More surprisingly, for the last three years not a single school has been electrified by the government, for the reasons best known to the authorities concerned.
According to the details furnished by Unified District Information System for Education for the year 2016-17, against the national average of 63.14 percent of the schools with electricity connections, Jammu and Kashmir lags far behind the national average. Jammu and Kashmir had merely 37 percent of the elementary schools with electricity connections while 63 percent of the schools are without electricity connections.
Moreover the states and Union territories with around 100 percent electrification in schools include Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, New Delhi, Goa, Gujrat, Lakshdeep, Puducherry, Punjab and Tamilnadu. The Jammu and Kashmir is among the states with lowest electrification of the schools. The other states with electrification of schools’ percentage lower than Jammu and Kashmir include Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Megalaya and Tripura. Moreover the department of School Education and Literacy has launched an integrated scheme for school education-SamagraShiksha with effect from 2018-19, which subsumed the three central sponsored schemes SSA, RMSA and Teacher Education (TE). Under the SmagraShiksha scheme, a total of over 1.95 Lakhs government schools were electrified across the country but the in the last three years 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19 not a single school was electrified in Jammu and Kashmir.
Moreover according to the data available, the schools with computer facility available in Jammu and Kashmir are only 17 percent, while 83 percent schools are without computer facility for the students.
