Early Times Report

Anantnag, Jan 26: In violation of norms, the Anantnag Municipality in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district has started dumping sold waste along river bank on newly constructed by-pass road near District Library.
The Municipality is picking up garbage from different areas of Anantnag town and then dumping on road, a group of locals told Early Times.
“Municipal Committee is dumping the garbage near sensitive water body from past few weeks and concerned departments including Irrgration and Flood Control Department suprisngly aren’t raising objections against this illegal practice,” they said
The garbage piled up on road is causing huge connivance to the people and could be a reason for the outbreak of some dangerous epidemics.
They said that illegally activity is posing a serious threat to ecology of the area and aquatic life in rivulet.
Locals said that instead of dumping garbage on road the municipality must find alternative location for collecting the garbage.
Mohd Ismail Mir, Executive Officer Municipal Council Anantnag admitted that they are collecting garbage on by-pass road near district sports stadium before taking it landfill site.
“It is our collection point and it’s not near to District Library,” he said.
Mir however said that collection of garbage at sources will help them in disposing off the solid waste at pace.
“We are almost disposing off 85mts of garbage on each day,” he said, however sought cooperation from the local population of Anantnag town.
