Traffic to ply from Jammu to Srinagar for 2nd day today
1/27/2020 12:05:51 AM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 26: Traffic will ply from Jammu to Srinagar for the second consecutive day on the national highway, the only road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.
Traffic on the highway was allowed for two days from Srinagar to Jammu on Thursday and Friday.
A traffic police official said that traffic will ply from Jammu to Srinagar for the second consecutive day on Sunday and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction.
However, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) had to cross Nagrota before 1000 hrs , he said, adding Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs), including trucks carrying essentials, oil and LPG tankers, will be allowed in the afternoon. "No vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction to avoid traffic jam since the road is very narrow at some places, particularly between Ramban and Ramsu," he said
Frequent closure of the highway due to landslides, shooting stones between Ramban and Ramsu often lead to shortage of essentials, including fresh vegetables, meat, chicken and LPG cylinders in the valley, which is entirely dependent upon imports from different northern states. Prices of essentials also go up when highway gets closed.
People are facing acute shortage of meat as majority shops are closed as they could not get sheep. Butchers said hundreds of trucks carrying sheep and other products are stranded in Jammu for the past more than a week.
Meanwhile, there was no change in the situation on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh highway, the only road connecting Union Territory (UT) Ladakh with Kashmir, and 98-km-long Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, and Anantnag-Kishtwar road which remained closed for the past 47 days on Sunday due to accumulation of snow and slippery conditions.
