Influential’ shopkeeper provokes traders for protests in Srinagar
1/27/2020 12:07:39 AM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 26: An “influential shopkeeper” on Residency Road here has been allegedly provoking traders to opt for protests against the ban on roadside parking of vehicles on the busy road.
Sources said the shopkeeper, who runs a prominent departmental store in the area, wants that the ban on the roadside parking of vehicles be lifted so that the customers coming to his said shop don’t have to walk. The said shopkeeper who is seen as close to the corridors of power had received complaints from his customers that they don’t want walk for visiting his shop and that vehicles should be allowed to park right outside the shop.
Officials said despite traffic jams in the area, the officials had been allowing roadside parking of vehicles right outside his departmental store.
But recently, in the wake of the orders of the J&K High Court, any parking of roadside vehicles in the area has been banned.
The decision of the High Court has been widely hailed as it has brought end to traffic jams in the city center and the vehicles move around smoothly.
While other shopkeepers in the area have been demanding parking space, the said shopkeeper in question recently provoked around one dozen shopkeepers in the area to close their shutters as a mark of protest.
Sources said though the said shopkeeper wanted all traders in the area from Poloview to LalChowk to opt for shutdown for around two hours, not more than a dozen odd shops in his neighborhood acted on his advise. Sources said he wants to show his influence in the market for “personal gains.”
Sources said given the luke warm response to his strike call, the said shopkeeper is lobbying to get another strike held.
The administration however is unwilling to let vehicles park on the main road. “When the ban on roadside parking has brought an end to the traffic chaos why should some traders take entire city hostage by seeking parking outside their shops,” said a senior official in the traffic police.
Despite repeated attempts the said shopkeeper couldn’t be contacted for comments.
