SRINAGAR, Jan 28: A single parent family consisting of five members is living a life full of hardships since the lone bread earner of the family was snatched by jaws of death after he was seriously injured in a grenade explosion almost three months back.
The grenade explosion took place at Hari Singh High Street in the heart of summer capital of union territory of Jammu & Kashmir. The explosion shattered the family of Khan’s living in the Habak area in the outskirts of the Srinagar city. The family is yet to come to terms after losing its head.
Fifty years old Fayaz Ahmad Khan, resident of Meerak Shah Colony, Habak used to sell traditional fast food item (masala) at Hazratbal market in order to eke out a living for the family consisting of six members. On November 4, 2019 he decided to go to Hari Singh High Street to sell his merchandise, but fate had something terrible in store for him and the family.
On this day militants lobbed a grenade towards Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel at Hari Singh High Street and more than 20 persons were injured in the blast. Rinku, a resident of Saharanpur-Uttar Pradesh died on the spot, while as some others including Fayaz sustained serious injuries in the blast.
Fayaz battled for his life for few days, but ultimately breathed his last on November 8 thus leaving the whole family shattered and shell-shocked. He had gone to Hari Singh High Street with a purpose. The jaws of death ensured that the promise made by Fayaz with his wife is not fulfilled. Khan is survived by his wife, two daughters and two sons. The eldest daughter is aged 28 years while as the eldest son is aged 26 years. The other two children are aged 25 years (daughter) and 23 years (son) respectively.
“As the winter was approaching Fayaz’s wife told him that there is a need to purchase some blankets that could be as flooring in order to keep the cold away. Fayaz told his wife that he would go to Hari Singh High Street and sell his merchandise in quick time and get the blankets in return from the market,” said a group of locals while narrating the tale to Early Times.
The locals said that the Khan family was waiting for the blankets, but received the shocking news that their bread earner has been grievously injured in the grenade blast. For days together the family members tried their best to save the life of Fayaz, but did not succeed.
“Fayaz’s death acted as a huge setback for the Khan family and they are yet to recover from the shock. The family has been pushed to the wall and the future seems to be bleak for the wife and children of Fayaz. So far justice has eluded the family for the reasons better known to the people at helm,” said the locals.
Tehsildar North, Dr. Haroon Rashid said that the compensation case of the family of Fayaz has been forwarded to the office of Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar on December 13, 2019. The family has sought intervention of higher authorities so that they get the compensation without any further delay.
