early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 13: Police today recovered the body of a cleric inside a Masjid in the volatile area of Maisuma in the city centre in the afternoon. The cleric was apparently murdered by some person immediately after the afternoon prayers.
Reports said that police recovered the body of 78 years old cleric and former chief of Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM) Abdul Gani Dar inside a Masjid in the Maisuma area. Abdul Gani Dar alias Gani Ghazali was a prominent cleric of Jamiat-e-Ahlihadith (JeA) and had offered the afternoon prayers at JeA Masjid at Maisuma.
Reports said that Dar offered prayers in the first floor of the Masjid and was having a chat with some other person after the culmination of prayers. The conversation between the two carried on for some time and people became suspicious when Dar did not come although the other person left the Masjid after some time.
As soon as people entered the Masjid they were shocked to see the body of Abdul Gani Dar. The police was immediately informed and the body was recovered from the Masjid. It seems that Dar was hit hard in his head with some sharp object by the other person and he died due to the smash of the object. The deceased was a resident of Rusu, Beerwah in Budgam district of Central Kashmir.
A case has been registered by the police in police station Maisuma and investigations have been taken up on fast track basis. In April 2011, JeA president and senior cleric Moulana Showkat Ahmed was killed in an explosion at the same place. Sources said that Dar was questioned with regard to Moulana Showkat, but was later set free.
A spokesman of Police said that the Police today attended a crime spot following inputs about death of a person inside a mosque in Srinagar. Srinagar police received information about murder of a person inside a mosque in Maisuma area of Srinagar in the afternoon hours today. Accordingly senior police officers visited the crime spot and retrieved the dead body of an individual, the spokesman said.
The killed person has been identified as Abdul Gani Dar alias Gani Ghazali age about 80 years resident of Russu area of District Budgam.
“Photography and video recording of the crime spot was carried out besides team members from FSL were called on spot for the examination of scene of crime. Following the scientific procedures of investigation, circumstantial evidences and samples were lifted from the scene of crime for the purpose of investigation,” said the spokesman.
The spokesman said that detailed search of the premises was also carried out adding that Police is also examining the CCTV footage pertaining to the area. Dead body of the victim was taken to hospital for conducting medico legal formalities and will be handed over to the family members after completion of medico legal formalities.
