The government slapping Public Safety Act against two former chief ministers, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, and few other second rung NC and PDP leaders recently has put a big question mark over the future of the traditional parties in the Valley.
The National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party seem to be at the verge of becoming irrelevant in absence of the leaders, who have led these parties during all these years.
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during his speech in the Parliament made it clear that statements issued by-Omar, Mehbooba and National Conference president, Farooq Abdullah- prior to August 5, 2019 were unacceptable.
PM Modi's assertion was a clear hint that the three former chief ministers of J&K, including Farooq Abdullah, were booked under Public Safety Act to send a clear message that no one can be allowed to preach sedition and separatism.
Nearly fifty politicians were detained in Kashmir on and after August 5, 2019, when the Government of India (GoI) announced its decision to abrogate J&K's special status and bifurcated the erstwhile State into two union territories.
Many of the detained politicians, who assured the administration that they won't indulge in any rhetoric, have been released.
National Conference second rung leaders have made it clear that they won't be able to decide their future course of action till Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah are set free. Some NC leaders, who tried to raise the issue of their party fighting to seek restoration of Article 370 and statehood, were rebuffed by their party.
On the other hand the PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti, has been left alone by her former associates. They seem to be working towards forming another party which would emerge as an alternative for NC and PDP both. Mehbooba's daughter Iltija Mufti has been handling her mother's twitter account. Her statements indicate that Mehbooba is no mood to give up.
It appears that three former chief ministers of erstwhile J&K State have been the big losers. They have lost their parties as well New Delhi's support, which they enjoyed all through their political careers. In fact people sitting in National Capital went out of way to ensure that Farooq, Omar and Mehbooba rule J&K. Their parties coming in power had helped them to keep their flocks together. In absence of any binding force, NC and PDP have lost their cadres on ground. And if top leaders of both these parties continue to remain under detention their parties will become a history.
