EARLY TIMES REPORT

SRINAGAR, Feb 13: In the dimly-lit corridors of the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura Srinagar, steel boxes and wardrobes lie scattered on the floor while uncovered bundles of important file folders gather the dust.
To make the matters worse, the stacks of rusty metallic trunks and boxes make it difficult to move in the aisle.
“If this is the condition inside premier health institute of Kashmir, what will one expect in other hospitals? The rusty boxes are giving an ugly look to the SKIMS Soura. Besides, anyone can steal the files lying scattered on the floor,” an official at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura said.
Near the washroom on the second floor, which also houses Director SKIMS Soura’s office, there lies wardrobes with important files.
“There are always chances these could be damaged due to water. We told authorities several times to keep these hospital records in rooms but to no avail,” the official said.
“There are always chances of getting the files misplaced, worn out or lost. Several confidential files also got misplaced over the years. There are also chances of stealing,” the official said.
The official said there was a lot of load on the premier health institute. “If authorities are not properly maintaining important files then you can imagine health care system of the institute,” the official said.
He said people across the Valley are not meeting the basic requirement at the SKIMS Soura and are receiving treatment far below than the national average.
Annually, the SKIMS Soura, receive over 11 lakh patients.
An official of the SKIMS said they receive referrals from all districts of the valley.
“The hospital is catering to a large number of patients from across the Valley, many are often referred to the hospital at critical stages,” the official said.
The official said that government has not only failed to lift the health care system in far-flung areas but its record is also abysmal in upgrading the health infrastructure in urban areas.
