Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 16: Awareness cum check up camp was today organized at Government Middle School Purana Pind RS Pura by Dr. Sushil Sharma.
Emphasising his concern as well as importance to educate young populace about the dangers of drug abuse, Dr. Sushil Sharma said that keeping in view present set of circumstances it is essential that parents, teachers and the youth themselves are educated about the signs and symptoms of substance abuse, so that they can identify it early on and get the affected person help as soon as possible.
Many abused substances, legal or otherwise, damage the heart in various ways. Prolonged use and polysubstance abuse can compound the risks associated with heart problems and cardiovascular disease. People who suffer from drug or alcohol addiction often have misaligned priorities, he added.
More than 300 people especially youngsters were screened, evaluated and sensitised for various health ailments vis a vis their linkages with different drug addictions.
During his interaction he highlighted that if someone has cardiovascular disease and begins or continues to abuse substances, their condition could worsen rapidly. The weaker the body, the harder it is to fight illness. Even if the abused substance does not directly lead to cardiovascular disease, other negative health effects can increase the likelihood of heart problems. Other heart problems caused by substance abuse may include hypertension, arrhythmia, coronary thrombosis, congestive heart failure, hemorrhagic stroke. Many of these complications are interconnected. Abusing substances that can have negative effects on heart health in any way can raise someone’s chance of developing cardiovascular disease. Prescription opioids have also been observed to raise the likelihood of cardiovascular death with long-term use. Injection drug abuse, which may include opioids like heroin or fentanyl, has been linked to an infection of the heart called infective endocarditis.
