Three day workshop on research methodology begins at JU

Jammu, Feb 18: A three day workshop on “Research methodology in History’ organized by the Department of History, University of Jammu, was inaugurated today in the conference Hall of the Computer Sciences of the university of Jammu.
The Chief Guest on the Occasion Prof. Nirmal K. Singh, Deputy Chief Minister and the speaker of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir recalled the contribution of historians and the responsibility they have towards the making of nation.
In this context he spoke about the importance of working on the history of Jammu, specially the ancient part of history. Citing his personal experience of research, he pointed out important areas, particularly of the cultural history of the region which awaits the attention of historian.
Prof. Manoj Dhar delivered in his presidential address stated that the research in history is no different from research in natural Sciences. They both contribute in equal manner to social development. He went on to state that for a good quality research output a relationship of harmony must exist between the data and the researcher on the one hand and also between researcher and the supervisor on the other. He added that the available resources are being used to encourage the culture of academic and research on the campus. He also thanked him for envisaging keen interest in the academic affairs of the campus.
Prof. Susmita Basu Majumdar, an eminent Epigraphist from the Department of Ancient Indian History and Culture, University of Calcutta, delivered the key note address. She spoke on the rational of such workshop and went on to add how important it is for the researcher to merge with the sources of history. She added that it is crucial to keep reading and re-reading the available corpus of historical evidence and also to formulate a new set of questions to be asked to the sources. It is this constant exercise that lead to the emergence of new history. She also underlined the fact that history progresses through debate and discussion and not necessarily through consensus. Therefore, historian should not be weary of questioning the established notions of History.
Prof. Jasbir Singh, the Dean Social Sciences, also offered his observation on the workshop and further congratulated the Head, Department of History, for organizing such an academic event.
Among others Prof. Arti Bakshi, Prof. Jigar Muhhamed, Prof. Anupama Vohra, Dr. Madhulika Singh , Dr. Tirtha Raj Bhoi, Dr. Anu Mankotia, Dr. Versha Gupta, Dr.Anju Bala, research scholars, students and academic fraternity of the university were also present on the occasion.
