Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 18: The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu and Srinagar is likely to start from the ongoing session of 2020-21.
Sources in the department informed Early Times that the Health and Medical Education department has been asked by Union government to identify locations to start MBBS course from the AIIMS Jammu, whose proposed location is at Vijaypur Samba, as well as AIIMS Srinagar, whose proposed location is Pulwama in South Kashmir.
The Health and Medical Education department has identified over half a dozen locations in Jammu and over ten locations in Srinagar to start the courses in makeshift structures from the current session on rented accommodations.
“The intake capacity for the both AIIMS will be 50 seats each and three courses will be started in the first phase including Anatomy, Physiology and Bio-chemistry”, sources said.
Sources further disclosed that the rent for the makeshift accommodations would be paid by the Union Territory led state government initially but was later paid by the Union government.
“The Health and Medical Education has prepared a memo to be presented in the State Administrative Council (SAC) for getting its approval for the rent as well as to select one of the location, to make the make-shift structures.
The rent will be approved by the SAC after which the locations would be finalized to make arrangements to start the courses in Jammu as well as Kashmir valley, sources said, adding that at present the construction work the proposes site of Vijaypur is at the nascent stage and few days back the Union Minister had performed Bhumi Pujan there.
“The proposed completion of the AIIMS Jammu is 2023, while the proposed date of completion Srinagar AIIMS is 2025. The makeshift structures will house the classes for initial years and same will be shifted to the proposed locations after the necessary infrastructure would be in place”, sources said.
