Centre expresses concern over poor quality of PMGSY in J&K
2/18/2020 11:29:52 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Feb 18: The Government of India (GoI) has expressed concern over poor quality of works being executed in Jammu and Kashmir under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), an ambitious rural road connectivity programme.
As per the information available, the Centre flagged its concerns over unsatisfactory works during the pre-empowered committee meeting of the scheme held in New Delhi on November 1, 2019 to discuss proposals submitted by J&K government in a meeting held which was attended by official from Jammu and Kashmir.
“Unsatisfactory works grading particularly in maintenance is slightly high and is a matter of great concern. Almost half of the state roads are coming under satisfactory grading in Jammu and Kashmir", centre said in the meeting.
Now the Centre has directed J&K government to improve quality of works executed under the scheme. “State should try to work hard on this front so that quality is improved,” reads the minutes. In the meeting, the Jammu and Kashmir government has also been directed to get all the roads inspected against which payment has been made.
Moreover, “176 cases of over 12 months have not been inspected by State Quality Monitors. These need to be inspected immediately,” the record read.
The meeting was attended by top officials of Union Rural Ministry and J&K government’s Roads and Buildings Department which executes the projects under PMGSY.
The PMGSY scheme was launched in 2000 by Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government to provide connectivity to all unconnected rural areas. J&K has completed 11000 kilometers of road length against the total sanctioned length of 19000 kilometers.
