‘Gang wars’ hurt Amar Singh College image, academic activities
2/19/2020 9:06:30 PM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Feb 19: The Amar Singh College here is witnessing alleged “gang wars” that have affected the academic activities and the image of the iconic college in the summer capital of Srinagar, while some students were also allegedly injured in such incidents.
A senior official working at the college said while the academic activities were already affected “due to mismanagement”, the “frequent brawls between college students and goons have festered the crises.”
Sources said last week five to six car-borne youth stormed the college and roughed up some students.
As per the college staff, the youth who rushed into the college premises in a white car(number withheld), managed driving the car to the spot where the students were sitting.
“They (youth) in the car jumped out and started beating the students ruthlessly. One of the college students was so badly wounded that he started vomiting right there,” said a delegation of teachers on the condition of anonymity, adding they could do nothing to prevent the fistfight. “Frankly speaking despite being present at the spot, none of us(teachers) dared to intervene as we were scared of as to who these car borne youth could be and if they were some armed gunmen,” they added.
After beating the students, the youth left the college in their car.
A senior staff member complained that the college, which had been known for discipline, is earning such a bad name. “How did the youth from outside manage unauthorized entry into the college that too in a car and managed to beat the students?” the college staff asked.
The students, on the other hand, complained that for the last two years, the “academic activities at the college are already badly hit.” “For over two years, our classes are not being held regularly as the teachers remain busy with their own personal work. Let the government probe it,” said a delegation of the students.
A delegation of parents told Early Times that they were concerned about the welfare of their wards. “Since the day we got to know about the goons having attacked the college, we are concerned about the welfare of our wards,” the parents said. The parents have appealed Lieutenant Governor GC Murmu to look into the matter.
Meanwhile, a senior official at the college downplayed the matter saying that only an isolated incident had taken place. “There was some misunderstanding… The issue was resolved there and then,” the official said.
