Bukhari group, businessmen hold 'secret' meeting at Gulmarg

Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 22: To gain support of cross sections of society in Kashmir, a group of Kashmir based politicians on Friday late held a 'secret' meeting with valley's top businessmen at famed tourist place Gulmarg.
Sources privy to the meeting told Early Times that valley's top businessmen including former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's close friends also attended the meeting. Former Minister Altaf Bukhari also attended the meeting and presented his 'vision' before the businessmen and sought their support. The meeting, they said, was held in a top hotel at Gulmarg.
"The businessmen in the meeting agreed in principle to support the party being launched by former Minister Altaf Bukhari," sources revealed. The meeting was also attended by some lawyers and others representing other sections of the society.
"Politicians mostly expelled legislators of Peoples Democratic Party have assured the businessmen that they will do everything to ensure the interests of businessmen aren't hurt," they said.
As reported earlier, Bukhari along with some expelled PDP leaders are mulling to float a new regional party in Jammu and Kashmir. Bukhari, according to media reports, has said that his new political party will represent the aspirations of both Jammu and Kashmir regions.
"Yes, a new political party will be formed. Many leaders from other parties are going to join this party. Young professionals, lawyers, social activists will also be part of our new group. We have formed a committee to draft the constitution of the new party," Bukhari had told a New Delhi based media group.
Bukhari was expelled by the PDP last month after he along with his party colleagues met a delegation of foreign envoys and diplomats in Srinagar. Bukhari had also praised the Modi government for ensuring no loss of life in the Kashmir Valley after the revocation of Article 370 and 35A in August.
On January 9, the PDP expelled eight party leaders--Dilawar Mir, Rafi Ahmad Mir, Zaffar Iqbal, Abdul Majeed Padroo, Raja Manzoor Khan, Javaid Hussain Baig, Qamar Hussain, Abdul Rahim Rather besides Shah Mohammad Tantray--two days after they met the Lt Governor G C Murmu under the leadership of Bukhari.
Tantray then resigned from the primary membership of PDP, citing his unhappiness with it over "unnecessary expulsions" of leaders for meeting Lt Governor.
