Kashmir centric leaders left with two options, either quit politics or fall in line

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Feb 23: The Chief Election Commissioner setting the ball rolling for the delimitation in Jammu and Kashmir by appointing Election Commissioner, Sushil Chandra, as his nominee to head the Delimitation Commission in the newly carved out Union Territory has put the Kashmir centric parties in quandary.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said that the traditional parties in the Valley, National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party have been left with two options either to fall in the line or quit the politics. “Both these parties use to play the politics over the issues which never fell in their domain. They ruled J&K by telling the people of Kashmir that no one from Jammu will ever hold the chief minister’s office and it’s the exclusive right of Kashmiri leaders only. For the past seven decades they ensured that number of assembly seats in the Valley remain more so that they are able to maintain their hegemony,” he added.
The analyst said, “Situation has changed post August 5, 2019, when Centre announced its decision to reorganize J&K by revoking its special status and dividing the erstwhile State into two Union Territories. The Kashmir centric parties can no more call the shots. Jailed former J&K chief ministers, Farooq Abdullah his son Omar Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, who used to sell Kashmir as an issue and used to talk about reversing the clock to 1947 don’t stand anywhere today. Their parties are at the cross roads. The PDP stands decimated, while the National Conference is at the verge of getting disintegrated.”
He said, “Once the delimitation is completed assembly elections will be held soon. If NC and PDP decide to stay away from elections as both these parties have been doing in the past that will mark their end, if they decide to contest then they will have to fall in the line and put national interests first. If NC and PDP leaders want to contest the elections, then they will have to tender an apology and tell people the truth. Hollow slogans and rhetoric won’t work.”
An observer said that the Government of India has drawn the line and Kashmir centric politicians can’t cross it. “They can no more befool the people by preaching separatism and hoisting green flags in their rallies. The New India is about nationalist leaders and not about those people, who believe in appeasing Pakistan and their agents in the Valley,” the observer added.
