Death of infants in Ramnagar, health deptt yet to take action

JAMMU, Feb 23: The Health Department of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory is yet to take legal action against the pharmaceutical company, which was believed to be responsible for the death of 12 infants in Ramnagar of Udhampur district.
However, the concerned the authority claimed that they are waiting for final report, which shall be submitted by a team of doctors and the necessary action will be decided after receiving the detailed report.
It is in place to mention here that at least 12 infants died of a mysterious disease and six others taken ill in Ramnagar block of Udhampur district following which the Union Government had sent a team of medical experts to ascertain the cause of deaths.
On January 20 this year, the team comprising Specialist (Paediatrics) Safdarjung Hospital Dr Sumit Mehndiratta, Deputy Director (Microbiology) Dr Mahesh Waghmare, National Centre for Disease Control, Delhi; Dr Suneet Kaur, Assistant Director (Epidemiology) National Centre for Disease Control, Delhi; Dr Shilpa Tomar, Microbiologist, NIV Pune, and Dr Avinash Deoshatwar, Epidemiologist, NIV Pune visited Ramangar for an on the spot assessment of the situation.
According to official sources, the team of doctors had reportedly given to understand that Diethylene Glycol was found in the pharmaceutical preparation of “Coldbest-PC Syrup”, manufactured by Himachal based pharmaceutical company. Prompting, the concerned the authority to request Himachal Pradesh Government to conduct a thorough inspection of the pharmaceutical unit to evaluate/ascertain the aspect of Diethylene Glycol impurity as also help effect product recall of the said drug, irrespective of the batch in the larger public interest.
Sources said that if the company is found guilty, the criminal proceeding should be initiated so that others should learn lesson from it that what can happen if anyone plays with the lives of the innocents.
