EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Feb 26: Notwithstanding government's claims of opening nine medical colleges in J&K, the UT still faces lack of medicare facilities.
According to reports, there has been no decrease in the rush of patients to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu despite starting of Medical Colleges of Kathua and Rajouri. Even the Medical College Doda has also started working partially but patients are still referred to Jammu.
The patients especially the accident victims are not treated in these hospitals but they have become referring units to GMC&H Jammu.
Even yesterday six persons including five travelling in a car met with an accident in front of GMC Kathua. Among them seriously injured pedestrian was shifted to GMC&H Jammu as proper facilities of treatment were not available at GMC Kathua.
The same is case with other GMCs in UT, sources said. Sources said J&K lacks medical facilities totally and people prefer to shift patients outside as GMC&H Jammu is not able to tackle heavy rush.
Sources said the accidental emergency hospitals and district hospitals too lack facilities who fail to treat the seriously injured patients in the event of a fatal accident.
Sources said whenever in the event of accidents on National Highway the patients brought to accidental hospitals on NH or district hospitals are referred to GMC after giving first aid.
This has been common in all accidental as well as district hospitals in the UT.
Sources said the accidental Hospitals at Vijaypur and Ramban on NH were constructed to provide specialized treatment to accidental victims. But they have failed to live up to the expectation and their utility has not been more than a dispensary.
Sources said the dearth of doctors and other staff including lack of equipments has been the cause of shifting the accident victims or other serious patients to GMC&H Jammu putting them to lot of trouble, sources added.
